You can leave it down or style it however you like and you are good to go!

Box dyes work differently for different people due to a variety of factors; the original colour of your hair and how long you leave the dye on for.

When asked about her thoughts after dyeing, Sher Ling said: “The tedious process of making sure that the dye gets on every single strand of hair makes me reconsider self-dyeing my hair [again].”

The real cost of self-dyeing your hair

An eight step guide to dye your hair at an affordable price but TAN YAN HUI finds out that not everyone is a fan of box dyes

Box dyes have always been the easy go-to option for hair enthusiasts to change their hair colour at an affordable price but what is the real cost?

Here are eight simple steps for you to dye your hair while answering some concerns about dyeing your hair in a salon and dyeing it with a box dye at home.

Ms Kelly Lok, 37, is a creative stylist that specialises in hair dyes from 99 Percent Hair Studio. When asked about the differences between dyeing your hair in a salon and with box dye, she said: “The effect [on your hair] would definitely be different. When you dye it yourself, you are unable to see the back of your head so it tends to be more uneven. For basic colours, a salon would not use strong chemicals to treat your hair except when bleaching is required.”

She added that box dyes might have a higher concentration of chemicals as compared to the dyes available at a salon, where the hair stylists are able to mix different chemicals to get a milder or stronger dye. This would affect the texture and quality of your hair.

According to the Elite Daily, once your hair is dyed, the texture of your hair will change and it is important to use after care products to reduce the damage on your hair.

Florence Look, 16, has never had her hair dyed for fear of damaging her natural brown hair and having allergic reactions from the dye.

Despite the health risks involved, most box dyes provide protective gear such as gloves or plastic gowns to prevent the dye from touching your skin. The dye used was the L’Oreal Colorista Washout in blue which cost $10.14 after a 40 per cent discount from Watsons.

Koh Sher Ling, 17, is a hair enthusiast who has had her hair colour changed four times in the past six months. This is her first time using a box dye as she had always visited a salon to colour her hair in the past.

She says: “I enjoy dyeing my hair as it allows me to express myself creatively.”

Box dyes are not only affordable, but also takes only a maximum of 20 minutes to dye your hair; a much shorter duration than that of a salon. Sher Ling, a first-time user of box dye, has decided to put her hair dyeing skills to the test.

Supplies needed for this how-to includes a box dye of your preferred brand, towel, comb and a pair of plastic gloves.

Step One:

Shampoo and wash your hair.

Step Two:

Blow dry your hair thoroughly to prepare your hair for the dye. The colour would seep into dry hair more easily.

Step Four:

Apply dye at the ends of your hair. Try starting on a strand of hair from a hidden section of your hair that cannot be seen from the outside.

Step Five:

Proceed to coat your hair evenly with the dye, making sure that you apply dye on every strand. You may use a comb to even out the dye in your hair and to prevent your hair from clumping together.

Step Six:

Leave it in for 15 minutes to allow your hair to absorb the dye. Leave it in for a maximum of 20 minutes to achieve a more vibrant look.

Step Seven:

After 15 to 20 minutes, rinse the dye off thoroughly with water, until the water runs clear.
