The Beauty Industry has blossomed into an ethical consumerism-based industry, where more brands are selling cruelty-free products and featuring women of all skin colours.

According to statistics by Market Research Future, cruelty-free makeup products in the market are expected to have a growth rate of 6 per cent from 2019 to 2024. Consumers are becoming increasingly mindful about what ingredients go into the products they buy and what they apply on their faces.

Batrishia Anaqah, 19, a student says: “I only buy vegan and cruelty-free makeup products because I’ve seen all those videos on what goes on behind-the-scenes with non-cruelty-free products. That’s not something I would want to support.”

In fact, Singapore has its own local makeup brand that is both vegan and cruelty-free. It is none other than Tulips Cosmetics.

Created in 2017, Tulips Cosmetics caters to makeup beginners who wish to play with makeup while being eco-friendly and socially-conscious at the same time.

I had purchased their “Party City (Purple)” eyeshadow palette ($25) and their “Glazed ‘Venus’ Lipgloss” ($14.90) through their online website.

When I opened the package, the eyeshadow palette immediately caught my attention with its shimmering purple glitter on its fluorescent gold casing.

Rise of ethical makeup brands

With the increase of conscious consumers, NURUL HUMAIRA uncovers why more makeup brands are embracing moral principles like never before

Published 7 August 2019

Tulips Cosmetics is a proud advocate of inclusivity. They believe that anyone can wear their products no matter one’s skin type or skin tone. For every launch of a new product, Tulips Cosmetics features a woman of a different skin colour in their campaign.

Nor Natasha, 20, finds that diversity is important in Singapore due to the different races living in the country. She believes that when women of colour are being represented in a makeup brand, others will feel included as well.

As Tulips Cosmetics caters to makeup beginners, the products are ranged at a much lower price.

Based on an independent survey conducted by The Walking Sun, 87 per cent of the respondents would rather spend less than $50 on makeup products, however 13 per cent of them would prefer spending more than $50. With the great price range and numerous benefits, The Walking Sun’s Nurul Humaira decided to give Tulips Cosmetics a try.

The only problem I had was with opening the palette. The casing was too tight which took me a few tries to open it successfully.

The eyeshadow palette comes with a mirror and 12 pans of colours. The mirror is the perfect size for you to apply your makeup; it is neither too big nor too small. The palette has incorporated a nice mixture of formulas; matte, shimmers and even glitter. When I swatched the various shades on my forearm with just one swipe, the colours were fully pigmented.

It is definitely suitable for a makeup beginner who intends to explore more with colours. It has a mixture of warm shades for everyday looks. However, it also consists of bold shades (such as hot pink and purple) for someone who wants to come out of their comfort zone. With its small size, this palette is travel-friendly and convenient.

Next, I purchased a product from their latest collection; Glazed Lipgloss. The design of the lipgloss was simple yet eye-catching due to its shade of colour.

I was greeted with a delicate orange scent when I first tried it on my lips. The smooth formula was so lightweight and comfortable. The lipgloss was not sticky at all, so you don’t have to worry about getting your hair stuck on your lips!

If you are looking for a local makeup brand that aligns with your beliefs and price range, Tulips Cosmetics is definitely worth the try.
