Sengkang residents need not travel far to study in a conducive environment as study spaces have been made available at Residents’ Committee (RC) centres.
12 study rooms have been opened in Compassvale, in addition to the study rooms at Senkang Community Club (SKCC). These study rooms are located in the Residents’ Committee (RC) centres scattered around Compassvale and allow students to study in a safe and conducive environment.
Students of all ages who live in the area can enjoy the convenience of having a study room a walking distance away. More students start to fill the rooms as they prepare for major examinations such as the Mid-Year-Examinations. During examination periods, these RC centres are open from 1pm to 9pm. Oftentimes, students from nearby schools head over after school hours to study.
“It only takes me less than five minutes to walk over from school. I can study in an air-conditioned room and be productive until dinner time,” says Nicole Tan Wen Ying, 15, student of Sengkang Secondary School. Students like Nicole find it time-saving to be able to study at one of the RC centres than to travel to the public library or going to an expensive café.

However, some fast food restaurants and café patrons have complained about students hogging seats while they studied and hence, the RC centres decided to take action and make life easier for students. These rooms are free to use and stocked with snacks and drinks that are available for consumption. It is much more cost-efficient for students to study at these study rooms instead, creating a win-win situation for all.
Mrs Michelle Neo, a teacher at Pei Hwa Secondary School, feels that studying in RC centres “could be safer [than studying at a fast food restaurant] as Singapore is generally a safe country.” She added on that she felt like most parents would support their child studying in public spaces.
As there is supervision from members of the centre, many parents feel safe about their child studying in RC centres. Additionally, parents can even make their way down to the RC centres to check up on their children and fetch them home.
One such parent is Mdm Jasmine Teo, 40, mother of two. She says, “I feel assured when my children study here. I can even come on down and bring them food and check on their studying.”

SKCC has even prepared study packs for students studying on Tuesdays and Saturdays. These study packs are distributed during the examination period from 6pm-8pm on Tuesdays and 2pm-4pm on Saturdays. They are filled with snacks like candy and bread to motivate students to continue working hard.
Tong Su Ning, 17, spends most of her time preparing for her examinations in the study room. She says that she chooses to study here as, “I can bring my own food and I won’t get chased out. My parents also know that I am safe in the centre.” Su Ning also appreciates the effort put into the study packs for the students.
The study rooms are greatly appreciated by the residents in Sengkang. The conducive environment and convenience of these study spaces have made the lives of both students and their parents much easier.
